TwinsUK: The UK Adult Twin Registry

TwinsUK is the UK's largest adult twin registry and one of the most comprehensive in the world, focusing on the genetic and environmental factors influencing complex diseases. Established in 1992, the registry initially aimed to study osteoporosis and other conditions in monozygotic twins. Over time, it has expanded to include over 16,000 twins, both identical and non-identical, ranging in age from 18 to 100. The registry collects extensive phenotypic and genotypic data, allowing researchers to explore a wide array of health issues, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and aging. TwinsUK has contributed significantly to understanding the heritability of various traits and diseases, providing insights into the interplay between genetics and environment. The recent approval to include twin children will enable longitudinal studies across the entire lifespan, enhancing the potential for discoveries in health and disease progression.
