The Mobility Allowance is a social security benefit introduced in 1976 to help the handicapped with the extra costs of transport and getting about. The study aimed to provide information on how the allowance is used by recipients; how much it contributes to their transport costs; how much their mobility has changed since receiving the allowance; what recipients think about the allowance. Variables The nature of the disability or handicap; general travel behaviour and the effects of the allowance on this; attitudes to the problem of getting about and to the allowance itself.
