Publicly Announced Job Losses in Named Corporations in the UK, 1976-1981
To assemble a computerised data set containing details of all locatable job losses occurring within named corporations in the U.K. between 1976 and 1981, using reports in the <i>Financial Times</i>. The data set has been used in two ways: (a) to analyse aggregate patterns of job loss among leading corporations; (b) as a basis for depth case studies of selected corporations. Variables The data set contains three types of variable: (a) Details of job loss itself, e.g. total numbers lost; employment before loss; redundancy, closure or wastage. (b) Ownership details, e.g. name of parent; name of subsidiary; nationality of ownership. (c) Locational variables, e.g. place name as reported; county affected; location of parent headquarters; assisted-area status; settlement type of affected location.
