Political Perceptions, Political Education and Voting among Young People, 1986-1988

The main aims of the project are: 1. To assess the impact of formal education in politics on the political attitudes and behaviour of young people, and more generally to examine the role of formal education in politics in political socialisation; 2. To explore the voting behaviour of young people in terms of three competing models of party choice - the party identification, issue voting and `interactionist' or principle voting models - and to use the survey results as a basis for clarifying and assessing the models. The project was designed to be carried out at the time of the general election of June 1987 in order to assess young people's political attitudes and voting behaviour in that context. Political education; political perception/attitudes; political knowledge; political socialisation; voting behaviour/party preference.
