Maximizing the benefits of participation in music amongst older people: Developing a skilled workforce
The focus of the follow-on work from the NDA Music for Life (MfL) project is to disseminate findings and develop Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities for facilitators of music with older people. The MfL project showed that participation in musical activities had social, emotional and health benefits for older people. However, there were issues relating to lack of training for facilitators despite the research revealing that they played a key role in fostering effective outcomes for participants.Their interpersonal qualities, teaching strategies, skills and knowledge were perceived as more important, in some cases, than the content itself. The research team, in consultation with providers is developing and will deliver and evaluate a workshop and resources for community musicians which will be delivered in each of the nine MusicLeader regional networks. This workshop will be underpinned by evidence from the MfL project. The workshop and resources will be developed in consultation with and input from a range of providers and will be evaluated. Taking account of issues arising, a training day will be offered to Music Leaders from the nine areas to equip them with the skills to continue a regional CPD offer in the long term.
