Contemporary Work Situation of Clerical Employees, 1979-1981

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of mechanisation (computerisation) on clerical work, with particular reference to the de-skilling of the clerical labour process; to examine the feminisation of the non-manual labour process and the implication of both computerisation and feminisation for male and female careers. Attitudinal/Behavioural Questions Attitudes to work, promotion, computerisation, flexitime and trade unionism; class location of clerical, administrative and managerial employees; the nature of work done and levels of control; previous employment (since entering the work force), other employment (jobs) with present employer; willingness to be geographically mobile and extent of geographical mobility. Background Variables Age, gender, marital status, family composition, present employment level; formal educational and vocational post-entry qualifications; trade union membership.
