Career Structure of Technical College Graduates, 1969 and 1971

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a degree taken at a college of technology or a polytechnic was inferior to one taken at university in terms of employment opportunities. The question of whether HNDs are recognised as degree equivalents was also examined. Attitudinal/Behavioural Questions This was a two stage survey, the first questionnaire administered in 1969, the second in 1971. Questions included in both stages: Occupation(s): type; nature of firm; salary; promotion prospects; introductory training; source of information about job; starting date. Questions asked in first stage only: Occupation(s): reasons for leaving; satisfaction of expectations; reasons for remaining in job; future plans; salary expectation in five years. Attitude to: career choice; qualifications; promotion prospects. Questions asked in second stage only: Occupation(s): intention to remain; total number of jobs held since leaving college. Evaluation of usefulness of degree/HND. Background Variables Age, sex, marital status, qualifications (where taken, results).
