The purpose of this project was to produce a machine friendly version of the manuscript index of employers of manservants in England and Wales in 1780, as contained in PRO T.47/8. The data was to be entered on to a computer and then put into a package that would have the following facilities 1. a printed version of the source; 2. a subset of the full list that could be called up under any one of the following criteria : town, county, name, employers of a given number of servants; 3. facilities for producing a statistical breakdown of the data, including that of a given subset of the data. The data comprises the following variables: name, town/location and county of employer, and the number of servants employed. A subset of the data lists employers with servants in more than one location.
